Located in the capital city of Dar Es Salaam, Muhimbili National Hospital is the largest public hospital in Tanzania. Under the aegis of Abbot Fund, significant development of the Intensive Care Unit is underway to bring it to current standards of care to allow it become a regional center of excellence. Work began in 2010 and is ongoing, in conjunction with the hard-working Emergency Department leadership and registrars.

The Hebbal and Yeswantpura sites in the southern Indian city of Bangalore are the hubs for its widespread satellite of hospitals across the Indian subcontinent to provide affordable and high quality care in a community setting. We were invited in 2009 to assist in ICU development and the relationship is growing to include quality assurance mechanisms to maintain and monitor the quality of care at this institution.

In the aftermath of the devastating tsunami in 2005, efforts were organized through the NGO Project Hope and Massachusetts General Hospital to provide infrastructure, clinical, and educational development to the largest government hospital in the province on the island of Sumatra in the fields of pulmonary and intensive care medicine, during the years of 2005 and 2006. Our staff was pivotal in providing guidance in this regard and were very much well received.

In the spirit of continuing medical education, Dr. Ramnath continues to act as a Visiting Professor of Medicine to the European University of Madrid, conducting seminars and classes to students and faculty in a range of topics spanning ethical issues in the ICU, critical care disease, and telemedicine development.
