Venktesh R. Ramnath, MD

Dr. Ramnath received his Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University in 1994 in Cambridge, MA and completed his medical studies at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in 2000 and his residency in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Weill-Cornell) in New York, NY in 2003. Subsequently, he served as Chief Medical Resident at NY (formerly NYU) Downtown Hospital from 2003-2004, after which he completed his fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the Harvard University hospital system (Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital) in Boston, MA in 2007. He joined Harvard Medical School faculty as ICU Director, Staff Pulmonologist and Critical Care Intensivist at Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, MA until 2009. He then moved to California and served as ICU and Respiratory Care Director at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California from 2010-2012; ICU Director at Sutter San Leandro Hospital in the San Francisco/Bay Area in 2013; and ICU Director at Resolute Health Hospital in New Braunfels, Texas until 2016. During this period, Dr. Ramnath also acted as Consulting Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative & Pain Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, CA until 2014. His interests have incorporated digital health, entrepreuneurship, and innovation, including active involvement in Stanford Medicine X, a healthcare initiative to advance patient-centered approaches to healthcare innovation.
In addition, Dr. Ramnath has extensive experience in Telemedicine services, particularly Tele-ICU, having served as Chief Operating Officer for Offsite Care Inc., a telemedicine startup company covering clinical services in 11 specialties in >10 hospitals in northern California. He has several research publications that address how best to optimize technology to ensure best practices through the application of telemedicine services.
Dr. Ramnath joined University of California at San Diego in 2016 as Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine and Director of Critical Care and Telemedicine Outreach for UC San Diego Health. In addition, in December 2019, he was named Medical Director of Select Specialty Hospital San Diego, a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital affiliated with UCSD. Dr. Ramnath continues to perform research in telemedicine, advanced clinical applications of machine-learning based algorithms and techniques, and the use of immersive (augmented and virtual reality) technologies to improve the bedside experience.
Dr. Ramnath is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Thoracic Society, and American College of Chest Physicians.
In his spare time, he plays western classical violin, enjoys watching European football, and occasionally scuba dives while on travel.
